Our Conductor
Jenny Hansell
read music at the
University of Durham and for many years she combined teaching music in schools
with performing. Jenny is now a freelance soprano, private teacher, vocal coach
and conductor.
As a solo singer she specialises in the performance of Baroque and Classical
Oratorio and vocal chamber music. As well as singing the masterpieces of the
period such as Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers, Schutz's Christmas Story and the 18th
century repertoire of Bach, Handel, Haydn and Mozart, she has given the first
modern performances of many re-discovered works particularly Marc-Antoine
Charpentier, a selection of whose motets she recorded for Cologne Radio in the
ensemble Sospiri. Jenny has also performed a number of more contemporary works
such as Vaughan Williams' Ten Blake Songs and Copland's In the Beginning.
Singing has taken her throughout Britain and to France, the Czech Republic,
Holland, Germany, Austria and Slovenia and she has made three visits to Israel
for performances of medieval songs, music by Purcell and Handel's Messiah.
As well as working with the Horsham Chamber Choir, Jenny directs a local parish
church choir, sings with the Brighton-based vocal ensemble Celestial Sirens and
conducts a chamber choir of female voices.
